Previously in Astonishing X-Men:

The X-Men have reassembled, and the Xavier Institute For Higher Learning has once again opened its doors.

Dr. Kavita Rao just announced to the public that she has isolated the mutant gene-and found a cure. This news has sent shockwaves through the Xavier Institute community. Secretly, Beast pays a visit t Dr. Rao (an old colleague of his) at the Benetech corporation, and she gives him a sample of the serum so he can verify her results-and possibly use it himself.

That night Beast examines the serum in his lab…and makes a shocking discovery: Dr. Rao has been testing her serum on mutant corpses. The X-Men go immediately to Benetech to investigate, but once their gone, a foe they’ve recently battled-an alien calling himself “Ord of the Breakworld” who appears to be in league with Dr. Rao-pays a visit to the institute and performs the serum’s first successful test-on a young student.

Meanwhile at Benetech, Kitty Pryde explores a subterranean detention area and finds more than she bargained for: the X-Men Peter Rasputin, a.k.a. Colossus. Her first love, long thought dead, is alive and well.

Meanwhile, the situation heats up for the rest of the X-Men when Ord returns to the lab-but it is Peter who ultimately saves them and defeats Ord. He is about to finish off Ord for good when Colonel Nick Fury arrives, with a full S.H.I.E.L.D. detachment at his back.
