November 2002 saw Clive Woodward’s England take on the might of the southern hemisphere in three scintillating games of rugby. Captured on this official England Rugby video are extended highlights of England’s three magnificent victories over New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

England vs New Zealand, 9th November 2002, Twickenham

A sensational game of rugby that once again saw Jonny Wilkinson as the match winner for England. As well as setting up tries for Ben Cohen and Lewis Moody, he scored three penalties, two conversions a drop goal and a wonder try of his own, chipping over the All Black defence before collecting the ball and diving in under the posts. When Ben Cohen added his second try England looked good for the victory at 31-14 ahead. But New Zealand came roaring back as that man Jonah Lomu helped himself to his second try to set up a great fightback which clawed the All Blacks back to 31-28. Only a last-gasp tackle by Ben Cohen on Ben Blair saved the day for England, allowing them to hang on to a famous victory, only their 5th ever against the All Blacks.

England vs Australia, 16th November 2002, Twickenham. The Cook Cup

Another sensational game of rugby that saw England defeat the mighty Wallabies for the third time in a row. But boy did England have to fight! All looked rosy after a perfect start as another Ben Cohen converted try and three more Jonny Wilkinson penalties saw England race to a 16-6 lead. But Australia fought back impressively to turn the game around with two tries from the outstanding Elton Flatley and another by Wendell Sailor taking them to a 28-16 lead. A penalty apiece from Wilkinson and Matt Burke put Australia 31-19 ahead with 25 minutes to go but that was that for Australia. Matt Dawson was inspired as England fought back with two more penalties from Wilkinson and a great try from Ben Cohen which, converted, saw England take the lead 32-31, a lead that they hung on to resolutely. It was a great victory and one that England thoroughly deserved.

England vs South Africa, 23rd November 2002, Twickenham

This was not just a victory – it was a mauling. the South Africans were blown apart with England inflicting the biggest defeat in the Springboks’ history. The early sending off of Jannes Labuschagne for an appalling late challenge on Jonny Wilkinson helped spur England on but in truth they were already well on their way to securing a comfortable victory, their record breaking 18th consecutive win at Twickenham. Phil Vickery was awesome, Dallaglio back to his best, and with seven more tries including another from the prolific Ben Cohen, England again provided exceptional entertainment. It rounded off a brilliant autumn in which England have convincingly despatched the three southern hemisphere giants to sit proudly at the head of the Zurich world rankings.
