Limited Edition Lledo Euro 96 England Nottingham Double Decker Diecast.

In 1958 the first European Football Championship, then known as the European Nations Cup, kicked off with a qualifying match between Republic of Ireland and Czechoslovakia. The final of that tournament being won by the USSR two years later in France.

Since then the event has grown steadily. Initially only 17 countries applied to qualify. By 1966 when the name of the tournament was changed by UEFA congress to the European Football Championship, this figure had risen to 31 countries clearly establishing it as Europe’s premier football tournament.

EURO 96 will be the largest ever championship. 48 countries having entered the competition, including England who are hosts, with 16 nations competing in the final rounds commencing on June 8th 1996. The final being played on June 30th when the winning country will pick up the trophy, which still bears the name of Henri Delaunay, the secretary of the French Football Association who first proposed the tournament.
